PNW Hair Restoration offers a variety of hair restoration treatment options, designed to address your specific hair loss needs. In terms of surgical hair restoration, we off two kinds of hair transplant procedures: follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit transplantation (FUT), which is also known as Linear Strip Excision (LSE). Both procedures have advantages for certain types of hair loss. During your consultation, we’ll discuss which one is right for your needs, depending upon your overall goals, desired hairline, the amount of follicles to being transplanted, and the thickness of your donor hair.
What is the Difference Between FUE and LSE?
The number of hair follicles harvested and transplanted at once is the key different between LSE (a.k.a. FUT) and FUE hair restoration procedures. As a result, LSE procedures tend to be a little faster to perform, while FUE procudures tend to heal a little quicker. Which works best will depend upon the candidate. The main difference between FUE and LSE hair transplants is the number of hair follicles harvested and transplanted at the same time. There are also differences in who would be the ideal candidate for each procedure.

What is FUE?
In a follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedure, individual hair follicles are removed from the donor area of the scalp, which is usually the back and around the sides, and transplanting to the recipient area. Because each hair follicle is moved individually, the only scars are tiny, circular, and heal quickly. As such, FUE incisions are commonly referred to as leaving almost no visible scars.
FUE procedures can be performed manually or with robotic assistance for advanced precision. Here as PNW Hair Restoration, we have the only ARTAS Robotic Hair Restoration System® in the state.
FUE hair transplant procedures are performed under local anesthetic. Because transplanting individual hair follicles takes more time, FUE procedures may be spread out over a few two- to four-hour sessions.
The ARTAS Robotic Hair Restoration System® is ultra modern technology, incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) that allows your surgeon to restore your natural hairline with the utmost precision. With the ARTAS® system’s 3-D imaging technology, your doctor will be able to design a new hairline that looks completely natural and maximizes the use of your donor hair follicles. The system next analyzes your natural hair distribution and selects the best donor follicles, based on individual hair density, orientation, angle, and hair growth direction, providing your doctor with all of the information required to create the best results for you. Lastly, the robotic seven-axis arm implants each hair follicle graft into the ideal recipient location.
Advantages of FUE Hair Restoration
- Excellent option for those with poor hair density or soft scalps;
- Quicker healing time than strip procedures;
- Shorter downtime after surgery;
- Less discomfort than methods that have larger incisions;
- No linear scar, only tiny, barely visible dot scars.
What is FUT?
In a follicular unit transplantation (FUT), also referred to as Linear Strip Excision (LSE), a small strip of hair follicles is removed from a donor area, which is typically the back and sides of your scalp. Those small strips of follicles are then spit into grafts of 1-3 hair follicles that are then grafted to the area experiencing hair loss. FUT surgeries are performed manually with a local anesthetic. These procedures are typically done in a single session that takes between four to eight hours.
Advantages of FUT/LSE Hair Restoration
- Quicker surgical since follicles are transplanted in groups;
- A large number of hair follicles can be transplanted at once;
- Provides maximum fullness for those with a balding crown;
- High rate of follicle survival;
- Generally less expensive.
