The overwhelming majority of us are affected by hair thinning and loss as we age, often affecting men in a way that’s more easily spotted – as they are more prone to bald spots and receding hairlines – than women, who typically experience hair loss through thinning on the scalp. This is in contrast to the rest of our body, as we are more likely to increase our overall body hair with age than we are to decrease it in a noticeable way. This has some people curious as to the differences between our scalp and the rest of our skin that cause this.
What Part Of The Head Is The Scalp?
The scalp is the soft tissue that covers your cranium, so roughly from above the eyebrows to the top of the neck. It also has five distinct layers:
- Skin at the top,
- Firm and dense adipose tissue below that,
- Muscle tissue underneath,
- Followed by connective tissue,
- And finally, a dense membrane over the cranium itself.
This area is also dense in blood vessels, as they transport nutrients to the hair follicles.
Do I Have A Dry Or Oily Scalp?
Your scalp is also home to your sebaceous glands, which produce necessary oils for your hair’s health. Overactive sebaceous glands will lead to an excessively oily scalp, and under-active glands will have the opposite effect. If you find that your hair is too oily or too dry, it will likely be necessary to implement a hair care routine with that in mind to maximize the health and longevity of your hair.
How Can I Tell If My Hair Is Growing?
Your hair growth on your scalp is all part of a series of four cycles: the anagen or growth phase, the catagen or transition phase, the telogen or resting phase, and the exogen or shedding phase. Some people might mistake the shedding phase as a sign they are losing their hair, but under normal conditions it is your scalp pushing out older hairs to make room for the growth of new ones as the phases cycle back to growth.
It is typical to lose up to 100 or so hairs a day from those in the shedding phase. If hair is being lost in excess of that, this may be a sign of a form of hair loss.
