In order for us to function and stay healthy, we require a number of nutrients. Good health (including good hair health) does not rely on a single nutrient but, with that said, it is hard to understate just how important water is to our day-to-day life.
Water makes up approximately 60% of an adult’s body. That is because some parts of our body are made up of more water than others. So, while our bones (for example) are made up of closer to 30% water, our skin is made up of more than 60% water. Our skin is not only our largest organ, but it is where our hair follicles are embedded, meaning that the health of our skin does correlate at least somewhat with our overall hair health.
How Does Drinking Water Affect Hair Growth?
- A Healthier Scalp
Countless studies have shown that keeping your skin hydrated improves its health and appearance. Your scalp is skin, so keeping it healthy and hydrated avoids certain issues.
- Healthier Hair
About one-fourth of hair strands are made of water so staying correctly hydrated helps to prevent breakage and brittle hair. Though over-processing hair, excessive use of heat-based styling products, etc. can also make hair brittle and/or cause breakage.
- Nutrient Delivery
Good hydration helps to deliver vital nutrients more easily to all part of the body, including hair. So, if you take vitamins for healthy hair or follow a diet for good hair health while routinely drinking insufficient water, you may not be properly transporting those vitamins and nutrients.
- Improves Hair Appearance
Dry hair looks thinner and lax. Properly hydrated hair appearance thicker and appears to have more life. That can even help to camouflage some hair thinning.
- Your Body Clears Waste Better
Staying hydrated allows your kidneys and liver to work properly and do their job of clearing waste correctly. When dehydrated, it is harder to clear waste and toxins.
Staying hydrated won’t stop hereditary hair loss or hair loss from disease. However, a healthy body, scalp, and hair strands may help to slow hair loss and keep it looking good in the meantime.
